Psychedelics in the World
Presented by Horizons Media, Inc., a 501(c)(3) educational charity
Dialogues about the political and cultural dimensions of psychedelics in the United States and across the world.
Following decades of exile and wandering in the desert, this year's Executive Order was a landmark in the regulation and perception of psychedelics. In its wake, new coalitions are forming to shape psychedelic legitimacy.
Well west of DC, the states of Oregon, Colorado, and New Mexico have rolled their own regulatory systems. Meanwhile, unregulated use and pop culture cachet of psychedelics continue to rise. And beyond recent trends, many traditional societies continue to quietly practice with psychedelics as they have for generations.
Join us at Psychedelics in the World as we survey the American and global psychedelic frontiers, and the unique combination of communities that inhabit them.

Opening Remarks
The Psychedelic State of the Union
In a mere 250 years, psychedelic medicine has emerged as priority for the government of the United States of America.
On April 18, 2026, the White House released an Executive Order emphasizing its importance to various federal agencies. Meanwhile, across the Mall from the West Wing, a bipartisan group of Congressional legislators continues to introduce bills to advance research and funding.
And well west of DC, the states of Oregon, Colorado, and New Mexico have rolled their own regulatory models, creating bespoke markets for supervised psychedelic experiences.
Join us to hear the unlikely but true story of how psychedelics have arrived in the halls of power, and what the next year might hold.
As The World Turns:
Global Psychedelic Policy Updates
While the United States continues to be at the center of many scientific, policy, and funding conversations of global import in psychedelia, it is hardly the only game in town.
Whether for reasons of response to mental health crises, unique regional customs, commercial incentives, public perceptions and policy towards psychedelics is evolving in many nations.
Simultaneously, as the unregulated use of psychedelics also expands, some jurisdictions have doubled down on prohibitionist policies and increased enforcement.
Conversely, in other countries, the lack of regulation or enforcement has led to cultural, ecological, and economic challenges for local communities.
What can we learn from the variety of global psychedelic policy, and how can we advocate for the safety and rights of psychedelic communities around the world?
Morning break
The Chemistry of Coalitions:
Navigating Tensions in the Politics of Psychedelics
Over the last five years, a bipartisan political coalition has accomplished a dazzling streak of cultural and policy victories that seemed impossible as recently as ten years ago.
While united by a desire to increase safe and effective treatment options for serious mental health and neurological disorders, tensions have emerged as communities with dramatically different belief systems and values attempt to collaborate.
What are the unique forces that have held an unlikely coalition together thus far, and can they withstand the energy that may soon be released as idealized dreams convert into complex realities?
Lunch break
Gabon, The Bwiti, Ibogaine… and America
Ibogaine, once obscure not only in American popular culture but even within its psychedelic community, has stepped into the limelight.
While much has been made of what ibogaine might do for North Americans and Europeans struggling with addiction, traumatic brain injury, and other serious illnesses, much less attention has been paid to the living communities from which it originates.
The history of the Gabon nation and its relationship with the United States, the many ethnic communities and tribes that inhabit its lands, and the Bwiti religious practices and other traditional uses of tabernanthe iboga, and the day-to-day lives of Gabonese citizens are rich cultural stories that are still very much still being written.
How might the newfound American and global passion for ibogaine affect this already-complex cultural, ecological, and economic landscape, and what are the futures that Gabonese communities hope will emerge from this unexpected historical moment?
Afternoon break
Stewarding Living Traditions in a Changing World
Long before randomized controlled trials and neuroimaging analyses walked the earth, a handful of societies scattered across the globe developed relationships with psychedelic plants and fungi.
Often refined across generations and woven into larger cultural belief systems and community structures, these varied traditions emerged, solidified, mutated, and spread across space and time— a living history which continues to unfold today.
How can we better understand the variety and complexity of these communities and their practices? What are the best ways to protect and support them in an era of accelerating change?
Join us to hear from the leaders, bridgebuilders, and scholars trying to preserve a place for living traditions in the modern world.
Closing Reflections
As the 19th Horizons conference comes to an end, speakers from across its many included disciplines will offer their parting thoughts, hopes, dreams, and questions after three long days of learning, connection, and community.
